About Black Friday

Black Friday is a term used to describe the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States, and the unofficial beginning of the Christmas shopping season.  On the Friday after Thanksgiving, shoppers jumpstart their Holiday weekend with most major retailers open early or overnight offering major discounts on a variety of products. This year’s Black Friday will take place on Friday, November 23, 2018.

In 1961, the term Black Friday originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a way to describe disruptive traffic that occurred on the day after Thanksgiving. As the phrase became more widespread, the explanation shifted to represent the point in time that retailers began to turn a profit, thus going from being “in the red” to “in the black”.
